Bryan Davies
A Brief History
Bryan at 17 became the youngest person in the world
to host his own television show "The Bryan Davies Show" on the ABC.
He went on to become a regular on Sing! Sing! Sing!" and one of the
family on "Bandstand". The first major satire television show in
Australia was the "Mavis Bramston Show" and Bryan was a cast member
for two years. "Dream Girl" was Bryan's number one hit and some of
his others hits were "Five Foot Two", "I Don't Want To Be Alone",
"Raincoat In The River", "Love and Money" and "10 Pin Bowling".
Bryan was flown to the UK and based in London to record with Norrie
Paramour
Bryan Davies on TV Program Teen Time
One guest artist, BRYAN DAVIES, making his first appearance on
television on September 27, 1960, brought along his father who had
gone to the trouble of writing out the music for the song that Bryan
had chosen to sing on the show. “Not another stage-father?” mumbled
Jon. Bryan’s dad handed out the homemade music to Jon who puzzled
over it for a few minutes, then handed it around to the rest of the
band who looked suitably impressed and amazed. The sheet of music
consisted entirely of crotchets going up and down at random. No bar
lines, no chords, no words, no nothing! Bryan’s father must have
stayed up all night trying to transcribe the melody line, note for
note. Jon broke the studious and silent pondering of the music,
“Could we have a quick listen to the record?”
“Sure!” said Bryan who, much to Jon’s relief, played us Elvis
Presley’s record of Treat Me Nice. As the record finished we
immediately launched into the song with Bryan singing along and
played it exactly the same as the record, much to the amazement of
Bryan and his dad. His father thought that we had memorised the
sheet of paper with the music on it. Indeed, Bryan was so excited
with the backing we gave him on the show that, instead of bowing to
the camera at the end, he turned around and bowed to the band!
As we went to a commercial break, Bryan noticed that I was shaking
my head. “Did I do all right?” said Bryan, looking like a puppy dog
who had just returned a stick. “Yes Bryan, you sang it perfectly
except that when you finish the song you’re not supposed to bow to
the band. When you did that, you gave the audience the arse!” “Oh
yes, of course,” said Bryan, looking rather dejected and wondering
if his career was finished. Bryan needn’t have worried. He made
plenty more appearances after that and even ended up with his own TV
show!
