Jo-Ann Campbell
A Brief History
Jo-Ann Campbell was born in
Jacksonville, Florida ,July 20 1938
She entered a music school at the
age of four and when in high school
became an accomplished drum
majorette.
In 1954 Jo-Ann traveled
Europe with the
United Service Organizations(USO) as a dancer, later
returning to New York, joining a
group called the JOHNNY CONRAD
DANCERS. They appeared on the Milton
Berle show and several other TV
shows' Ann then formed a dance team
called "THE HAYDENS".
In 1956 she decided to sing and
obtained a contract with ELDORADO
RECORDS after an appearance at
Harlem's Apollo Theatre. Upon
finding nothing suitable to record,
she wrote a song titled "COME ON
BABY" which was released in 1957.
Changing record companies, after
minor success, she released "WAIT A
MINUTE BABY" on GONE RECORDS. At
this time she also made numerous
appearances on American bandstand.
She also appeared in a movie "GO
JOHNNY GO". After releasing seven
singles on the gone label she
switched labels again to ABC
RECORDS, releasing "A KOOKIE LITTLE
PARADISE" in 1960.
In 1961 she starred in the movie
"HEY LETS TWIST" with Joey Dee
& The Starlighters and a soundtrack
album was released. In August 1962.
She released one of the best selling
answer records "I'M THE GIRL FROM
WOLVERTON MOUNTAIN"
Jo-Ann married
Troy Seals a record producer for
ATLANTIC RECORDS, they recorded and
released, in 1964, a song titled "I
FOUND A LOVE, OH WHAT A LOVE" billed
as JO-ANN AND TROY. After this she
more or less left the music business
but none-the-less left behind some
great female rockabilly and pop of
the era.
